LADY FRANCES
FRANCES BALFOUR, ARISTOCRAT SUFFRAGIST
Lady Frances Balfour (1858-1931) is the last of the British leaders of the votes for women campaign in Great Britain to have a biography. She is also the only member of the aristocracy and the only Scot to have had a British leadership role in the campaign. She was one of the best-known women of her day, yet today she is hardly known by students of women’s history, much less the general public.
She was the tenth of twelve children born to the 8th Duke and Duchess of Argyll. Her birth occurred in London, but her ancestral home was Inveraray Castle in Argyllshire in Scotland (You saw it in ‘Downton Abbey’ when the Crawleys went to Scotland for a short vacation – and where they picked up Rose).
